South Africa: Democracy and Development

Stellenbosch, South Africa (outside of Cape Town)

Description:

This program is designed to examine the new South Africa, its possibilities and challenges, and learn about economic development policies, human rights, democratization efforts, and contemporary politics.

Students will learn about the challenges of development and income redistribution in the face of widespread poverty and high prevalence of HIV/AIDS; the creation of judicial and political institutions in the post apartheid period; and the challenges of reconciliation, education, democracy and human rights. Students will also learn Xhosa, visit relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations in Stellenbosch and Cape Town, and visit historical sites around the Cape.

Language Requirements

No language requirement, but all students must take "Introduction to Xhosa" on campus before departure.

Course Type

A set curriculum of courses is offered:
  • The Political Economy of South Africa
  • Law and Politics: Democracy and Human Rights in South Africa
  • Contemporary South African Politics
  • Xhosa Language and Culture

Additional Information

The deadline for application to IPD 2010 spring programs is November 2, 2009.  However, Public Health in South Africa is already full.

Housing

Dormitories on campus. Single rooms with private bathrooms and shared kitchen facilities

Program Costs

Spring 2010: TBA

  • This will include the estimated tuition for four courses, housing, excursions, class materials, and international airfare from Chicago to Cape Town.  Students are responsible for the Study Abroad Administrative Fee, health insurance, meals and personal expenses.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. E-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and NetID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. IPD program application and interview with the IPD office.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
