This program is especially suited for students interested in studying the political and economic challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa and developing nations, West African cultural practices in various musical and dance forms, and critical issues of public health, development, and African history and culture.

Program Requirements

  • Required: 3.0 GPA and at least junior standing
  • Recommended: College-level coursework in African studies

Academic Specialties

West African performing arts, Twi language, and African studies.

Most Council students take at least one course in the School of Performing Arts, which has excellent, well-known faculty members:

  • Mr. Nii Kwei Sowah, the dance instructor who directs other groups in Accra as well, including the Ghana Dance Ensemble (of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana), which dances throughout Ghana and in other parts of the West African sub-region.
  • Mr. A Yirenkyi, the chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, is a well-known playwright in Ghana. He studied at the University as an undergraduate and earned his MFA from Yale.
  • Dr. John Collins, a guitar instructor, seems to be a favorite among many of the foreign students, mainly because of his extensive research on Ghanaian Highlife music.

Additional Enrichment Opportunities:
The program encourages community involvement through independent study options, excursions, volunteer activities, and for-credit and non-credit internships. Northwestern's Program in African Studies has close scholarly ties with faculty at the University of Ghana, Legon, especially those in the humanities and performing arts. These ongoing links between PAS and Ghanaian scholars will help students make best use of the academic resources during study abroad in Ghana.

Program Costs

Fall 2009: $19,065

  • This includes the estimated cost of tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application is not available online.
