Description: 

The summer program is based at Boğaziçi University on the European side of the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul, located at the crossroads between Asia and Europe and has always been a meeting point between East and West.  Having hosted ancient Anatolian, Greek, Roman, Bysantine, and Ottoman civilizations, Istanbul today is the cultural center of the modern Turkish Republic and a vibrant, global city. During this seven-week program, Northwestern students take two English-taught courses alongside other international and Turkish students enrolled in Boğaziçi's Summer Term, selecting from a variety of course offerings in the social and natural sciences, humanities, engineering and technology.

Students may also be able to participate in not-for-credit internship in a variety of fields. To learn more about this option, please contact the Associate Director of the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies program in the Buffett Institute, Ayca Alemdaroglu.

Note: This program is suspended for Summer 2017. Exceptions may apply for Turkish citizens. The status for future years will be determined during Fall Quarter 2017.

  1. Complete a Northwestern Study Abroad Application by March 1
  2. Complete a Boğaziçi University summer application by the program's deadli

Important Note
This program is located in country under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning and operates with special permission under the university's travel policy.

Students enrolled in this program will be required to adhere to additional security measures and sign a release acknowledging the Travel Warning.

This program is subject to suspension or modification at any time. These matters will be discussed in more detail during advising appointments and pre-departure orientation.

Housing: 

Boğaziçi University's Superdorm with single occupancy rooms but shared facilities (bathroom, kitchenette, common living room) with up to five people per suite. Laundry service is available for residents and periodical cleaning is offered by the dorm management. You will need to bring towels, bed linens and blankets or purchase a dorm package during check in.  You may check in and out anytime between 9 am and 5 pm; late arrivals may be accommodated with prior notice.

The dorm is approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the main South Campus and 15-30 minutes from several major shopping centers (Akmerkez, Metrocity, Kanyon, and Levent Carsi).

All Summer Term students have access to Boğaziçi's social facilities and cultural activities, including tennis courts, an open swimming pool on the South Campus, an indoor swimming pool and a fully equipped fitness center on Hisar Campus, as well as a soccer field and running track on Ucaksavar Campus. You may access library resources with your Boğaziçi University Student Identity Card that will be provided by the Summer Term Office during the onsite orientation.

Program Costs: 

Summer 2016: $4,500

  • The program fee includes tuition, housing, orientation, GeoBlue Global Health insurance, and the Study Abroad Fee.
  • Students should plan to budget an additional $3,300-$3,600 for round-trip airfare, in-country transportation, food, the dorm package, books, cell phone cards, and personal expenses.

Funding opportunities for this program: the Buffett Institute's Keyman Modern Turkish studies program offers partial scholarships to Northwestern students. Awards are based on financial need, essay quality, and academic merit. To apply, submit the Keyman Scholarship Application Form by March 7.  Applicants will be informed about the status of their application in mid to late March.
