  • In addition to the UCL Collections, students will have easy access to many important museums and galleries located near UCL in central London.
  • Students may apply to the Independent Studio Programme and specialize in painting, sculpture or fine art media. Students work in studios and are assigned to a tutorial group which meets regularly.

  • Semester only Studio Art students must take all of their courses in the art department. If you are an academic year student, you can choose to take either a full year of studio art or one semester of studio art and one semester of classes in other subject areas.

SIT - National Identity and the Arts Dakar, Senegal
  • Explores the contributions made by Senegal to the arts and culture of Africa. Arts workshops focusing on batik making, ceramics, and sand painting, or musical training ranging from traditional Senegalese dance to traditional instruments are incorporated into the program seminar.
  • Past Independent Study Project topics have included: ethnomusicology, the role of dance in ceremonies, industrial and traditional fabric dying and design, griots (musicians, historians, royal advisors), Senegalese film as a cultural statement, the work of the Sorano National Theater, the artists of Gorée Island, the talking drum, women and craft production, and contemporary Senegalese music.

Foreign Language Programs

SU Abroad in Florence Florence, Italy
  • The SU Center art studios are located at piazzale Donatello, in an area first designated as an "artists' quarter" in 1874.
  • Students admitted to the art program are expected to register for six to nine credits of studio courses. Based on portfolio review and areas of interest, students will be placed at the Syracuse Center, the Florentine studios, or in both facilities.
  • Students who wish to take only three credits of studio art may be granted permission by the art coordinator in Florence on a space-available basis. Interested students must present evidence in Florence (portfolio, samples of work, etc.) of requisite skills.
  • Elective courses in art history expose students to concepts, processes, and techniques of Renaissance masters and their precursors.
  • A gala art show, open to the Florence community, celebrates student work at the end of each semester.

  • This is a one semester, intensive internship/academic experience.
  • Students have the opportunity to obtain individualized placement for work and practical experience in Art, Art History, and Visual Arts Cultural Policy.

General Tips for Earning Major/Minor Credit Abroad

  • Research the course descriptions of the classes you plan to take abroad so your advisor can ensure the classes correspond to major/minor requirements at Northwestern.
  • Determine which NU courses you want to take when you return from study abroad. This is necessary because not all courses are offered every quarter.
  • For credit in your major, meet with your departmental advisers well ahead of time.
