IPD Specially Designed Programs

This page outlines some of the billing and financial arrangements for specially designed programs through Northwestern's Office of International Program Development (IPD), and is intended as a guide to help you navigate the financial aspects of your study abroad process. You should always refer to your published program materials and requirements for the most current information and instructions.

Feel free to contact Krista Bethel, Assistant Director of Study Abroad Financial Services, if you have any questions not addressed in the sections below.

  • Deposit

Northwestern students admitted to IPD programs are not required to pay a confirmation deposit, but will be charged a cancellation fee for withdrawing from the program after confirming.

  • Program Fee
Students participating in IPD programs will be charged a program fee, which includes tuition, accommodations abroad, all related program activities, and international health insurance. Refer to your program materials for exact costs and other estimated expenses abroad.
  • Student Visa Financial Certification

In order to obtain your student visa, you may need to provide documentation that you will be supported financially for the duration of your time abroad. This may require bank statements from your parents and/or a financial aid award letter; review your visa application instructions carefully to be sure you are providing the appropriate documentation, and contact IPD for assistance.

If you primarily fund your education through financial aid and/or loans, you may also contact Krista Bethel in the financial aid office to request a letter of financial support.

  • IPD Scholarships

NU students are encouraged to pursue outside scholarships for study abroad, including those offered by the IPD office. Students awarded IPD scholarships will see these awards credited on their NU invoice.

Contact IPD directly with any questions about applications, requirements, or deadlines.

  • NU Invoice

Your Northwestern invoice will be issued through CAESAR on the regular quarterly schedule, and will include your program fee.

If you receive financial aid and/or loans from Northwestern, these funds will continue to apply directly to your NU account.

If you are enrolled in the Northwestern 9PAY payment plan, you may still use 9PAY for your NU-billed study abroad expenses, but the amount you owe each month may be different. Contact Krista Bethel just before your study abroad term for a billing estimate to calculate your 9PAY payments.

  • WIthdrawal & Refund Policies
If you withdraw or are dismissed from an IPD specially designed program after submitting your Program Confirmation form, you are subject to the Withdrawal & Refund Policies for Northwestern-Sponsored Programs.
