Session Introduction
Advocating for our students, promoting programs, and internationalizing the campus are a common mission for study abroad professionals, but can also bring to light conflicting motivations and goals. The panelists will present common themes that arise when considering ethical advising from three perspectives: adviser, program manager and director. During this session we’ll present examples that highlight what happens when ethical guidelines come into conflict with each other, and how those conflicts might be resolved. Each panelist will also present possible solutions, and there will be ample time for discussion and feedback.
Ethics: A Primer
For most of us, it's been a few years since those heated discussions on ethics in philosophy 101. Here's a short and informative article on the topic, which also includes a practical guide for ethical decision making.
- A Framework for Thinking Ethically, The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University
Common Advising Guidelines
During the session we will refer to, but not go over in-depth, common advising guidelines. If you'd like to learn more about these before the session you can access them here.
- The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA): Statement of Core Values
NACADA provides a Statement of Core Values to affirm the importance of advising within the academy and acknowledge the impact that advising interactions can have on individuals, institutions and society.
- NAFSA's Statement of Ethical Principals
NAFSA provides a statement of ethical principles to help guide international educators in providing high-quality education and services to participants in international education and exchange.
- The Forum on Education Abroad's Advising Standards
The Forum's Subcommittee on Advising Standards is currently seeking feedback on these guidelines.

Suggest Topics for Discussion
An important part of this session will be participant discussion, and although we'll present several case studies we'd like to hear your thoughts on the topic. If you have an issue or scenario that you've encountered in your advising that you'd like the panel/participants to address, please email Michelle Gere, m-gere@northwestern.edu.
