Background

The mission of SERTS is to acquaint undergraduate students with the contributions that research universities make to the creation of new knowledge and how that information comes to be used for the benefit of mankind. The SERTS program has evolved from a single course, which initiated the tutorial model using extramural support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The tutorial model was envisioned by Dr. Fred Turek, Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor, Neurobiology and Physiology.

Subsequent funding from several sources in addition to the Hewlett Foundation including a Northwestern University Cross School Initiative, funding from the Office of the Provost, and funding from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, has enabled to expansion of the program to include a wide range of courses in several different departments. One significant early expansion in the program was the participation of faculty from the McCormick School of Applied Engineering and Science.
