Stanley Lo is a Senior Fellow at the Searle Center and the Curriculum Development Specialist at Northwestern University Ventures in Biology Education (nuViBE), a program funded by the Howards Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) that aims to transform undergraduate education in the biological sciences. He is responsible for coordinating the development of course content, teaching materials, and assessment methods for a new Introductory Biological Sciences sequence for freshmen and sophomores. He also leads the Entering Mentoring workshop for laboratory mentors (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) who work with undergraduates in biology research in NU BioScientist, an HHMI program that is modeled after the Science Research Workshop (SRW) at the Searle Center. Stanley’s interests in science education include understanding how undergraduates learn biology and incorporating interactive teaching methods to enhance conceptual understanding. Stanley is also a Lecturer in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (WCAS) Program of Biological Sciences.
Prior to joining Northwestern, Stanley was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University and B.S./M.S. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University. Stanley also taught high school biology and chemistry at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he established his interests in science education.
