How do I get the best search results?
To know more about the research of a specific faculty member, search by last name (using all or the first part of last name). To search a certain concept, enter a keyword or phrase into the "by concept" search box. You will be directed to a page where you will be asked to select from related concepts and to choose a subject area, i.e. Medicine and Life Sciences. Once the concept search is narrowed, all experts whose fingerprinted profiles match the search criteria will be displayed with the most relevant researchers appearing first. Click the plus signs next to each name to see a list of publications that deal with a concept you searched. You may add related concepts listed on the right side of the page to further refine your search. A "By Free Text" search broadens a concept search by bringing in content beyond the keywords. You may enter any text, such as publication abstracts and funding announcements, which will then be fingerprinted and matched with faculty members. Boolean search logic is enabled for both the “By Concept” and “By Free Text” searches -- using AND, OR, and NOT allows you to include or exclude and combine search terms to improve and refine your search results. To limit search results to pertinent researchers, only the top 50 results brought up by a full text search will be displayed. Concept and last name searches will display all faculty that match the search criteria.
Can I search faculty outside of Northwestern?
With Northwestern Scholars you can search for any faculty member with a profile with SciVal Experts or a similar research networking tool. This includes faculty at many major universities and research institutions including Harvard, Cornell, the University of Michigan, and UIC, among others. Select either the SciVal Experts Community tab in the menu bar on the left side of the page to see faculty with research profiles powered by SciVal (for a full list of research institutions using SciVal Experts, click here) or the DIRECT2Experts tab just below, which includes profiled faculty across all research networks in the DIRECT2experts group (see link). In addition, every time you conduct a standard search using the search bar in the top right corner of the page you have the option of including researchers in the SciVal Experts community or other research networks by selecting the SciVal Experts Community or DIRECT2Experts options just above the list of search results.
What publications are included?
Publications are automatically brought in by Scopus, a journal abstract database powered by Elsevier, on a weekly basis. Scopus has access to a large number of journals but does not capture books or book chapters. If some of your journal publications do not appear it is likely that Scopus does not have access to this journal or the year or issue in which you published. For a full list of the journals and years included in the Scopus data base click here. Any publications and other scholarly works not captured by Scopus can be added manually and fingerprinted through the Profile Enhancer (see directions below).
Why are some publications or other scholarly accomplishments missing from a profile?
Occasionally very few or no publications are identified using Scopus. This can mean several things - the faculty member may be publishing in journals not covered by Scopus, this may be a faculty member whose professional accomplishments are focused outside the realm of journal publications, or it may be an administrator within the organization.
To learn more about Scopus and its coverage, please visit the dedicated Scopus overview page. Scopus is continuously looking to expand its coverage across all disciplines and has significantly improved coverage of the arts and humanities since 2009.
We recognize that publications matched through Scopus may represent only a portion of the relevant scholarly accomplishments. Additional content such as books, non-Scopus publications, creative works, etc. may be added through the Northwestern Scholars interface. In the near future, such content will be included in the “fingerprint” of the expert Profile.
If this is a profile you have permission to update, click Edit your profile in the upper right-hand corner of your profile, and add as much or as little content as you would like.

How are citations counted?
Next to each Scopus publication in Northwestern Scholars you’ll notice a “cited by” number. This number indicates all the citations of this work that appear in other publications covered by Scopus since 1996. Publications prior to 1996 may have citations listed, but these numbers reflect only the number of citations in publications after 1996.
What grants are included?
Grants are uploaded automatically to faculty member’s profiles from records provided by the Office for Research and Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. The data from InfoEd include projects with funding received on or after 9/1/2004 and all previous awards within those projects. Only funding from external sources and sponsored research funding, not gifts, are included. Grants received by faculty during their employment at Northwestern are included, beginning with 8/1/1987. Grant data from Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago currently include only active grants; historical data will be added soon. Grant data from other affiliated groups (the Veteran’s Administration) will be added to Northwestern Scholars as the data are received.
In the InfoEd grant data, there are cases where a personnel role appears as the PI in Northwestern Scholars, such as student fellowships where the mentor is listed as the PI. This is consistent with Northwestern policy which does not allow a student to serve as PI. However, the sponsoring agency data (viewable on the agency web site) would have the fellow listed as PI as in the original grant application.
If any of the grant data on your profile are incorrect or grants that you think should be included based on this description are missing from your profile, send the information to fasis@northwestern.edu and the FASIS Team will make the proper inquiries.

How can you download data pertaining to an individual faculty member?
Publication data pertaining to an individual faculty member may be downloaded from his/her profile under the Publications link. Select one or more publications and then choose Export to Endnote.
How can you download data pertaining to a group of faculty members?
Data pertaining to a larger group of faculty members may be downloaded from the Northwestern Scholars Semantic Web Portal. This portal is a VIVO SPARQL Endpoint. The data are semantic web-compliant with full interoperability to the VIVO initiative. A key to these data is needed to use them with other Northwestern Enterprise data. Please contact the FASIS team for access to this key.
Bulk downloads of the data in Northwestern Scholars are available to each of the dean's offices at Northwestern. Please contact the FASIS team for these downloads.

If a faculty member has multiple appointments, under what department is he or she listed?
Each faculty member is indexed by the department of their primary academic appointment and listed on that department’s page. All other appointments are listed in order on the left hand side of the page.
How often is Northwestern Scholars updated?
SCOPUS Publications are refreshed on a weekly basis. Grant data and faculty included in Northwestern Scholars are updated quarterly. Publications and additional information added through the Profile Enhancer are saved to the profile in real time and fingerprinted immediately. The easiest way to change your fingerprint is to add or edit your research statement and keywords to reflect what aspects of your research you wish to be best represented on your profile. See below for more information on how to edit your profile.
Why don’t the
boxes appear on the 'Full Text' search?
The full text search is a bit different than concept searching, and has a few features that change as a result. First, the Fingerprint software revises the search results as you adjust the concept weighting on the right side of the screen; this changes the list of publications that support the search results and the resulting list of faculty members. Because the results change, we don’t expand the list of publications – instead the intention is for the user to adjust the weighting on the right side until they feel they’ve found the right person – then open that person’s profile to see the underlying data.
What is the "Vocabulary for Analysis" on the Full Text Search?
The scholarly accomplishment data in Northwestern Scholars are organized and fingerprinted using six different controlled vocabularies which represent broad subject headings. For more information regarding fingerprinting and controlled vocabularies, see a full explanation on the SciVal site.
Why are there duplicate terms on my fingerprinted profile?
You may notice that on some profiles certain fingerprinted terms appear twice. This is because scholarly accomplishments may be fingerprinted by up to seven different controlled vocabularies (see the full profile for any particular faculty member). If there are publications, grants, or other works with the same key term but in different disciplines using a different controlled vocabulary, the term will appear twice on the combined profile. Note that the term may be the same, but different publications may be associated with separate instances of the term.
Why does the department of one of my co-authors not show up as an internal organization in my Institutional Network?
If the coauthor is in the same home department as the profiled author this department will not show up as an internal organization in the Institutional Network.
What other universities are using this profile tool? Can I see their faculty profiles too?
Many universities and research institutions nation- and world-wide are using SciVal Experts – you have access to their profiles as well. When viewing the Find the Expert page after searching a concept keyword, you will see similar experts at Northwestern under the internal heading. Click on the Community heading to see similar experts at all institutions using the SciVal Experts profile tool. Click on the National heading to view similar experts at institutions using similar research networking software tools.
How can I add my name to the faculty list to be included in Northwestern Scholars?
