Northwestern values parents as partners in helping students adjust to the pressures of college life. Orientation and Parent Programs Website offers many valuable resources. Even though your student has moved away, he or she still needs your support and guidance. Here are some suggestions to extend your support and enhance your student's life on campus:
Stay in touch
Even though your student is experimenting with independent choices, he or she still needs to know that you're there and are available to talk over both normal events and difficult issues. Give your student an opportunity to "vent" about a roommating situation or academic concern. Sometimes they just need someone to listen then they feel better. Avoid the temptation to step in and solve the problem for your student. Encourage your son or daughter to seek the appropriate campus resources. If you are unsure who to contact regarding your student's concern, start by contacting the Area Coordinator who oversees the residential area where your son or daughter lives.
Give them room to grow
While staying in touch is important, give your student room to mature and learn to handle situations on his or her own. Your challenge is to listen actively and try to understand what they are saying or trying to say.
Be realistic with your college student about financial matters
Most students come to school with at least some plan about how tuition, fees, books, and room and board will be paid for, and what the family's expectations are about spending money. Be specific about your expectations from the start and you may avoid misunderstandings later.
Encourage them to use available Northwestern's resources
If your student does experience difficulties, encourage him or her to take advantage of the many campus resources available for students. The Counseling and Psychological Services staff is always available to help your student and there are a variety of sources for academic assistance as well, including the academic dean of your son or daughter's school and the academic advising center.
