FERPA and Student Rights to Privacy

Through the 1974 U.S. federal statute called the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) University staff are restricted regarding what we can discuss with parents without written permission from the student. However, under the Warner Amendment (1998), there are two instances where we may contact parents without the student's permission. Specifically, our department may contact parents if a student under 21 years of age is found in violation alcohol or drug policies. To learn more about FERPA, go to the Registrar's FERPA website.
