University Residential Life is divided into eight residential areas each under the leadership of an Area Coordinator. Area Coordinators (ACs) are full-time professional staff members who live and work in the residence halls. Our ACs typically possess a masters degree in higher education administration, counseling, or a related field. ACs are responsible for student and community development; staff selection, supervision and development; administrative resolution of student conduct issues; and emergency response and crisis intervention. Each AC reports to an assistant director who reports to the department's director.
Area Coordinators are assisted by Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) and/or Senior Community Assistants (SCAs). RHCs and SCAs are undergraduate or graduate students who live and work in the halls. RHCs are responsible for supervising staffs in 1835 Hinman, Shepard Residential College or Residential College Suites (ISRC, CRC, Jones). SCAs typically are responsible for a group of residents in their hall and complete additional administrative responsibilities.
There are two Area Coordinators on Call 24 hours a day, seven days a week when classes are in session. For emergency assistance after business hours, please contact University Police at 847-491-3456 and ask to have an Area Coordinator on duty contacted.
Community Assistants are upperclass students (sophomore, junior, senior) or graduate students who are responsible for approximately 40 students in their residential area. Each CA receives room and board compensation for their service during the academic year. In each of the eight residential areas there is at least one CA on duty for the area from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Residents should check the staff duty boards located in the main lobby of the building and near each CA's room door to learn which staff member is on duty on a particular evening. CA duty staff walk through their residential areas several times a night and are available by cell phone when they are not in their rooms.
In our residence halls for graduate students, our Engelhart Hall staff members are called Community Assistants (CAs) and our McManus Hall staff are called Student Directors (SDs). These CAs and SDs perform functions similar to those describe above for CAs in the undergraduate halls.
Our central office is located on south campus in the garden level of 601 University Place, Scott Hall, Room 10. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additionally, each Area Coordinator has an office in his/his residential area. To make an appointment with a staff member or to contact us with a questions, please call 847-491-3541.
