Hometown: Honolulu , Hawaii

Major(s): School of Communication

RC afflliation: College of Commerce and Industry (resident 2005-2007), RCB Co-Vice President of Philanthropy (2007-2008)

Current project /passion: I have spent much of this summer working with the Communication department of American Cancer Society Illinois Division. Though the job is stressful at times, there really hasn't been a dull moment and I am almost always busy working on articles for various publications, news releases for events throughout the state, and advocacy campaigns. When I'm not at work, I'm also spending a considerable time preparing for my senior thesis this upcoming school year. One of the biggest excitements about this will be working with Professor Elaine Wong, who I've known since freshman year through my dorm, CCI.

Hobbies : writing, volunteer work, practicing my Spanish and Vietnamese

Questions and Answers

Why did you choose Northwestern?

As trite as it may sound, college for me, is more than anything a time to simply grow as a person and learn about everything and anything that interests you. Though it was a hard decision, I chose NU because I saw it as the perfect place to do just this. Besides the rigorous classes which the University is known for, the overall environment of NU (the variety of extracurricular activities, the professors and your peers) simply fosters a very open and friendly environment where students can essentially pursue whatever they want.

What is the best thing about being a student at Northwestern?

The best thing about being a student is having the chance to meet, study and get to know a very diverse and interesting student body every day. I really am very amazed by how passionate, smart and talented the students I have met are. I think we learn a lot in our classes but also a lot from each other.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

I'm probably going to have to cheat on this one and choose two. My first favorite, and probably most people's favorites, is the rocks right next to the lake where it's always gorgeous and peaceful. As for my second favorite: the lounge in the College of Commerce and Industry, where I spent most of my first two years at Northwestern with fellow CCI'ers (studying, late-night snacking, goofing around). Believe it or not, I met some of the coolest people I know and had some of my best memories at Northwestern there.

What's your favorite class? Why?

Off the top of my head, Introduction to Moral Philosophy. Besides the interesting subject matter, I actually really enjoyed the writing assignments we did as well as the lectures and discussions. The class challenged us to critique different viewpoints on morality while also considering our own beliefs.

Tell me about your involvement at Northwestern beyond your RC.

For the most part, I've been involved with a pretty diverse range of activities. Though time limitations are an issue, there are always so many exciting things that are going on around campus that are pretty hard to resist. Volunteering for Organized Action by Students Invested in Society- OASIS (an umbrella service group that serves a wide variety of not-for-profit organizations in Chicago and Evanston ), and Alternative Student Breaks (ASB) are two activities that I have really enjoyed. In addition, doing Organization Communication research work and the Hawaii Club, keep me very busy and entertained.
