Shepard, a multithematic residential college, attracts residents from across the country and around the world - and from every school at Northwestern. This diversity enhances residents' opportunities for learning across intellectual, cultural, and artistic boundaries. Fellows affiliated with Shepard come from a variety of disciplines and get involved in lunch discussions, small group dinners with students, special receptions and dinners, and firesides. Recent firesides have discussed religious symbolism in Van Gogh's art and taken students on a guided tour of Dearborn Observatory. In Shepard's "Lunch with a Prof" series, faculty members discuss their research and describe how events, families, and strategies have shaped their careers. Shepard fellows and students take full advantage of major cultural events in Chicago, such as museum exhibitions, performances by the the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and theatrical productions. Shepard is a supportive and
learning community. A typical Shepard resident is outgoing
and enthusiastically involved in the activities of the college
and the University. The Shepard is located on South Campus and features a large recreation area with cable TV, a more formal lounge area with a grand piano, a kitchen, a small dining room, music and dance practice rooms, and a computer lab.
