NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES
Information for Assistant Master Applicants
Indication of Preference: As described in the residential colleges brochure, the themes of the residential colleges are not extensions of academic departments; when you consider where to apply, follow your interests and not necessarily your field of study. Residential colleges provide the opportunity for people to meet a variety of other people who share their interests.
You may apply to as many colleges with posted openings as you like, or even to all of them, but do not write on your application form any ranking or preference; such a move may jeopardize your chances for positions in the colleges you rank low on the list. Everything that you include on your application form and resume will be sent to the master of each college you indicate on the first page.At the end of the process, the Office of Residential Colleges will notify you by letter about the position (s). Generally, appointments are made by mid June.
Interviews: Not all applicants are interviewed. Appointment to the post of assistant master requires an interview both with the faculty master of the college and with the director of residential colleges. Off-campus candidates invited for an interview will be required to come to Northwestern at their own expense. If you live out-of-state but plan to visit Evanston in the spring, please indicate the dates of your visit on the front page of the application.
THE POSITION
Compensation: All assistant masters receive an annual stipend of $9,100.00; plus access to meals with the affiliated residential college during academic sessions. The stipend is allocated through monthly paychecks (September through June inclusively).
