We all have problems from time to time dealing with
normal pressures and perplexities of university life. There
are times when we would benefit from talking with a trained
counselor about our problems. One function of the Office of the University
Chaplain is to provide such help when it is sought by members
of the university community.
The Chaplain and Assistant Chaplain are available to talk confidentially with
those facing interpersonal conflicts, crises, difficult
decisions, or personal problems. Chaplains Stevens and Brown are equipped by
study and experience in counseling. For those who require
medical or psychiatric skills, they will be glad to assist you
in finding appropriate help. Facing one's problems and
seeking professional help is a sign of strength. It is as
sensible as going to a doctor for a physical problem or a
checkup.
The Chaplain's Office is located in the Alice S.
Millar Chapel (Parkes Hall 139). It is best to phone someone for an appointment, but if this is not convenient,
or there is a crisis situation, it is not necessary to have
an appointment in advance. If it is not convenient for you
to come to the Chapel Office during regular office hours, the
someone will be glad to meet you at a time and place of your
choosing.
Here are some of the problem areas in which the Chaplains
may be able to give assistance: interpersonal problems,
difficulties involving parents or family members, vocational
decisions, emotional distress, spiritual or ethical problems
or questions, sexuality, illness, hospitalization,
grief/bereavement, crises, premarital guidance, a sense of
general unhappiness or meaninglessness.
Members of all religious traditions or no
particular tradition are welcome to contact the Chaplains.
Persons desiring to talk with Chaplain Stevens may phone him at
the Chapel Office (847-491-7256) or at home (847-864-7865).
Persons desiring to talk with Chaplain Brown may phone her at the Chapel Office (847-491-7256) or at home (773-764-2446). Counseling and guidance are a normal part of a Chaplain's
work. Feel free to call upon them.
Other religious counselors are also available on campus, representing various religious traditions (Catholic, Jewish, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Southern Baptist). They are listed below, and may be contacted directly or through the Chaplain's Office. The Chaplains have additional resources for students of faith or religious beliefs that may not be listed below. For students with no denomination, or preference, members of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are also available for consultation at 847-491-2151.
