Use of Adjunct and Visiting Titles

The modifier adjunct is generally appropriate when a faculty member is working part-time at Northwestern and holds a continuing position at a non-academic institution (an orchestra, company, newspaper, etc.)   Adjunct appointments should generally be no longer than three years; they may be renewed indefinitely.

The modifier visiting is generally appropriate when a faculty member holds a position at another academic institution.   Only in rare cases and then with the permission of the Provost should a visiting appointment last more than three years.
