Advisory Committee on University Space Planning

President Henry S. Bienen established in October 2002 a University-level Advisory Committee on Space Planning to advise him on key issues related to future development on both campuses. The Committee's charge is to:

  • Articulate a vision and set of values to guide future development at Northwestern

  • Understand the needs and aspirations of the schools and administrative units of the University in terms of space implications

  • Take a long run perspective about the future development of the campuses

  • Understand the history of space planning and development at Northwestern and current zoning and other impacting conditions

  • Create a mechanism for University wide discussion and input on campus facility and space planning issues

  • Recommend ongoing mechanisms for input and representation on campus facility planning

The product of this work should support the subsequent development of a plan for both campuses. Among the issues the President hopes will be addressed are: how different facility and space configurations can facilitate and enhance intellectual interactions on campus; how such issues contribute to a sense of campus community; how they function to welcome visitors to the University; how they impact the neighboring communities; and how they impact traffic flow and parking concerns. It may also address broad parameters such as heights of structure, choice of materials, architectural style, accessibility, landscaping, and signage.

The Advisory Committee will report to the President by June, 2004.
