James B. Young Appointed Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs

Dear Colleague:

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. James B. Young, currently Professor of Medicine and Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Feinberg School of Medicine, has accepted the position of Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, effective July 1, 2008. He succeeds John Margolis, who is now the Dean and Chief Executive Officer of Northwestern University in Qatar.

Jim Young brings to the Office of the Provost both a breadth and depth of experience in faculty matters. He came to Northwestern as Professor of Medicine in 1991 after spending fourteen years on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School, and currently runs a research laboratory focused on nutritional neuroscience and obesity. He has held hospital appointments at both Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

During his tenure at Northwestern, Jim has served on numerous school and University committees, including the Feinberg School's Research and Management Councils, and the University's Committee on Animal Resources. In addition to his current appointment at Feinberg as Dean for Faculty Affairs, Jim has served as Associate Chairman for Research in the Department of Medicine and as Executive Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.

In the Office of the Provost, Jim's efforts will focus on faculty matters, including hiring, recruiting, retention, diversity, and policy development.
He will be the point person for the Office on faculty-related issues, and I will look to his counsel to help support faculty initiatives across the University.

I hope that you will join me in giving Jim a warm welcome to his new position.

Sincerely,

Daniel Linzer
Provost
