Announcement about NU- Qatar
To Members of the University Community:
I am writing to you regarding the leadership of Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), our campus that opened in August, 2008 in Doha, Qatar.
When John Margolis accepted the deanship of NU-Q in January 2008, he agreed to serve through the 2010-2011 academic year. Under his leadership, along with the hard work of many others, our new campus has been successfully launched with outstanding faculty, students, and staff. A strong foundation for future growth and development has been established, and we are moving forward on exciting new endeavors such as the construction of Northwestern's new building in Education City.
As we look at what has been accomplished to date at NU-Q, and what is planned for the future, it is important that we maintain our momentum by avoiding any gap in leadership and provide sufficient time for a smooth transition. It is thus prudent to launch our search now for the next dean, who would begin no later than July 1, 2011. It is conceivable that this search will yield a person who would be able to begin earlier than the summer of 2011. Should that be the case, John has let me know that he would be willing to step down from his position whenever his successor is able to assume the leadership of NU-Q.
We are therefore launching an international search with the assistance of the Witt/Kiefer executive search firm to help us identify the next dean of NU-Q. I will shortly be forming a screening committee comprised of deans, faculty, students, and staff from both our NU-Q and Evanston campuses to assist us in this search.
Northwestern University is deeply grateful to John Margolis for his outstanding leadership of our new endeavor in Doha. As a faculty member and then as an administrator in both the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost, John has served Northwestern extremely well since 1966. His work as founding dean of our Qatar campus will be only the latest of his many contributions to Northwestern before he moves on to a well-deserved retirement.
