Return to the Academic Placement Subject List
The Latin placement exam is offered online continuously over the summer. For instructions and the link to the exam, go to http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu/.
You may take the online placement exam any time. If you have questions about this exam or need assistance, please contact Jeanne Ravid (j-ravid@northwestern.edu) or Francesca Tataranni (mailto:f-tataranni@northwestern.edu). During Wildcat Welcome, staff will be available to assist you in the Classics Department, Kresge Hall, Room 1-535, (847)491-7597.
If you've had previous instruction in Latin and/or you believe your proficiency in the language may satisfy the Weinberg foreign language requirement, read the following guidelines carefully to find out if you must take the online Latin placement exam plan before continuing your studies at Northwestern:
The online placement exam is not required if:
- You scored a 5 on the AP Latin exam.
You have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Latin. We encourage you to continue your Latin studies at the 300 level and to consider a Latin major or minor. For current course offerings and more information, please refer to the Department of Classics homepage or contact Jeanne Ravid, Director of Undergraduate Studies, in the Department of Classics, Room 1-510, Kresge Hall, at 847-491-8043.
- You scored a 4 on the AP Latin exam.
The online placement exam is not required, but further course work is required to satisfy the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Latin. You should enroll in Latin 201-3 in Spring Quarter.
The online placement exam is required if you scored a 3 or lower on the AP Latin exam or had more than one year of high school Latin.
For instructions and the link to the exam, go to http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu/.
The online placement exam assesses skills in Latin grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and translation. To prepare, review the material covered in your high school classes. You must take the exam from start to finish in one sitting on the same day. (Your start and finish times will be included in your results.) Your performance on the exam will determine your placement in the appropriate quarter of LATIN 101-1,2,3, or 201-1,2,3. Once you've been placed in 101, or 201, the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Latin may then be satisfied by earning a C- or better in LATIN 201-3.
Important: Without written departmental permission, you may not enroll in a Latin class at a lower level than the one in which you are placed. If you do so, Northwestern considers this duplication of high school work and will not grant credit for the course.
The online placement exam should be taken over the summer. If you don't have access to the Internet, you will need to take the exam on a computer in your student residence or in a computer lab after you arrive on campus and before Wildcat Welcome.
There are many advantages to taking the online exam as early as possible in the summer:
- You'll get your score in time to learn about the course in which you'll begin.
- You can take the exam when you feel ready.
- You can take the time you need to complete the exam.
- You can work in a quiet, relaxed testing environment.
If your score is high enough to place you out of the third quarter of second-year Latin, a written examination will be required to validate your level of proficiency. The Classics Department will notify you of the time and place for taking the validation exam, which will determine whether you have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement and qualify for 300-level Latin courses.
