Before registering for French courses at Northwestern, you must take the online French placement exam unless any of the following applies to you:
- Your AP exam score in French language or literature is a 4 or higher.
You have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement in French. We encourage you to continue your French studies at Northwestern. For placement advice, please contact Professor Nasrin Qader, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of French, at 847-491-8263 or n-qader@northwestern.edu, or Professor Janine Spencer, Language Program Director at (847)491-7761 or j-spencer@northwestern.edu.
- You took high school French for one year or less.
To continue your French studies at Northwestern, register for FRENCH 111-1, offered in fall quarter only.
All other first-year or transfer students who plan to take French must take the online placement exam before registering for courses in the fall.
The online placement exam should be taken over the summer. If you do not have access to the internet, you will need to take the placement exam on a computer in your residence or in a computer lab as soon as you arrive on campus and, at the latest, by 3:30 pm September 17.
There are many advantages to taking the online exam as early as possible in the summer:
- You'll get your score in time to learn about the course in which you'll begin.
- You can take the exam when you feel ready.
- You can take the time you need to complete the exam.
- You can work in a quiet, relaxed testing environment.
By taking the online placement exam before September 1, you'll get your results before Wildcat Welcome. If you score high enough, when you check your results on the test site you will read that an oral interview and written composition will be required to validate your level of proficiency. This follow-up exam, offered September 18, will determine whether you have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement and/or qualify for 200- or 300-level French courses.
If you have questions about placement or need additional information, contact Professor Janine Spencer, Language Program Director in the Department of French and Italian, room 1-347, Kresge Hall, call 847-491-7761, or e-mail j-spencer@northwestern.edu. If you still need assistance, please attend the September 19 orientation session.
