Insects at the movies

This spring, the Block Cinema will continue to offer films that are open to the public. Many of the screenings are free and others have a nominal admission fee.

Block Cinema films are screened in the Block Museum’s 150-seat Pick-Laudati Auditorium.

The free Louis Family Nature Series will be screened from mid-April through late May. The “Nature” series is fun and informative for families, nature lovers or individuals who appreciate good films. It is made possible through the support of the Louis Family Foundation.

This spring’s selection of six nature films is centered on the strange and wonderful world of “arthropods” (insects, spiders and caterpillars) and will feature some of the best recent documentaries on the subject. Many of the “Nature” film screenings will include guest speakers and various activities.

The “Childhood: Times of Fear and Wonder” series focuses on poetic and challenging films that put children at the heart of complex situations.

A “Contemporary Turkish Cinema” series includes films with a variety of perspectives and aesthetic styles that challenge the idea that a national cinema is limited by geographic boundaries. This series is made possible through the support of the University’s Turkish Student Association, the Turkish Consulate of Chicago and the Center for Global Culture and Communication.
