Segovia Classical Guitar Series begins this weekend

For more than a decade, the School of Music and the Chicago Classical Guitar Society have collaborated in presenting the annual Segovia Classical Guitar Series, known for outstanding artistry and compelling repertoire.

The 2006-07 Segovia Classical Guitar Series season, which begins Jan. 13 and concludes May 11, is no exception. The five-concert series that will be held on the Evanston campus this winter and spring, will celebrate the guitar in its myriad incarnations with performances by international artists from Spain, the United States, Italy, Greece and Japan.

Renowned classical guitarist Pepe Romero will launch the series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Romero’s contributions to his field have placed him in worldwide demand and have inspired distinguished composers to write pieces expressly for him, including Joaquín Rodrigo, Federico Moreno Torroba, Francisco de Madina, Lorenzo Palomo and Pepe’s father, Celeodnio Romero. Pepe Romero, along with his father and brothers, created what is now the world’s premier classical guitar ensemble — Los Romeros. He received the Premio Andalucia de Musica prize, his native Spain’s highest recognition for contribution to the arts. Tickets for Pepe Romero’s concert are $28 for the general public; $25 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $12 for students.
