Endowed ProfessorshipsCharles Goolsby Floyd Elroy Patterson Research Professor of Pathology Charles L. Goolsby, professor of pathology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, has been appointed the Floyd Elroy Patterson Research Professor of Pathology. Goolsby is an expert in flow cytometry, a technique for simultaneous measurement of multiple cellular characteristics as well as the sorting of cells based on those measurements, if desired, to isolate subpopulations of cells for further study and analysis. He is director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and of the Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Goolsby’s major research interest is investigating the cell biology of B chronic lymphocytic leukemia, including dysregulation of apoptosis and the role of ZAP70 expression. He also is actively interested in the development of cell-based cytometry assays to analyze signal transduction pathways in the context of dysregulated signaling in hematopoietic malignancies and targeted kinase inhibitor therapies. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Therese McGuire Beatrice Foods Professor in Strategic Management Therese J. McGuire, professor of management and strategy and chair of the department, has been appointed the Beatrice Foods Professor in Strategic Management. McGuire teaches public policy analysis for managers and local public economics and business strategy in the Kellogg School of Management’s MBA program. She is director of the Guthrie Center for Real Estate Research at the Kellogg School. Her areas of expertise include state and local public finance, fiscal decentralization, property tax limitations, education finance and regional economic development. McGuire’s current research focuses on the effects of tax caps on local revenues and expenditures, state spending on social assistance during economic recessions, and fiscal decentralization and solidarity. McGuire has written about and advised various governments on state tax reform and on the impact of taxes on economic growth. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jill Pelling Joseph C. Calandra Research Professor of Pathology and Toxicology Jill C. Pelling has been named the Joseph C. Calandra Research Professor of Pathology and Toxicology at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Pelling is a translational cancer biologist working in the field of signal transduction and development of natural products for cancer chemoprevention. She is associate director for translational research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. She is also the associate director of Northwestern’s Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence and principal investigator of the NCI Training Program in Signal Transduction and Cancer. Pelling is working with a plant flavanoid called apigenin which is present in leafy vegetables and fruits and has been shown to inhibit UV and chemically-induced mouse skin tumorigenesis. Her studies are relevant to several areas of biomedical research including cancer biology, angiogenesis, cell signaling and development of novel chemopreventive agents. Her work has been funded by the National Cancer Institute for 21 years. Brian Uzzi Richard L. Thomas Professor in Leadership and Change Brian Uzzi, professor of management and sociology at Kellogg School of Management, has been appointed the Richard L. Thomas Professor in Leadership and Change. His award-winning and highly cited research uses social network analysis and complexity to model creativity and innovation, the dissemination of ideas and outstanding achievement in settings ranging from banking and law to university science and creative arts. His research has appeared in many leading journals, including the American Sociological Review and the American Journal of Sociology and Science. Support for his research includes grants from the National Science Foundation and Sigma Xi. At Kellogg Uzzi teaches leadership, persuasion and change management. He has received five teaching awards, including twice being named the Executive Masters Teacher of the Year. |
