Oct. 26-27 events planned for Women’s Center’s 20th anniversary

The following fall programs will celebrate the Women’s Center’s 20th anniversary. All the events, with the exception of the Oct. 26-27 conference, are free.

Disorders of Love Conference: From Everyday Disconnection to Traumatic Betrayal featuring Carol Gilligan, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, Double Tree Hotel, Skokie. The two-day conference will explore ways to end cycles of violence and create room for new and healthy experiences of love. Psychologist Carol Gilligan and other experts will examine the many factors that impact love and connection in women’s lives. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Admission ranges from $175 to $345. One Community Out of Many featuring Felice Yeskel, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, University Hall. Felice Yeskel, former director of the Stonewall Center at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, will discuss the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied community at Northwestern. The goal is for undergraduates, graduates, staff, faculty, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender to join forces to create a dialogue to strengthen the University community.

Economies of Gender with Felice Yeskel, 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, James L. Allen Center, Evanston campus. Within the context of the growing economic divide in the United States, Yeskel will explore the particular impacts on women who suffer disproportionately from the penalties of caring for others.

Economic Apartheid in America with Felice Yeskel, noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, Donald P. Jacobs Center, Evanston campus. During this interactive presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the effects of race and class divisions in the United States. The massive income and wealth shifts of the past 25 years and the power shifts and rule changes fueling this inequality also will be explored.

Evanston Staff Holiday Luncheon, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, Women’s Center, Evanston campus. Staff from the Women’s Center and the Association of Northwestern University Women (ANUW) invite women staff members to attend this festive event to honor their contributions to Northwestern. Further 20th anniversary celebration programs will continue throughout the winter and spring quarters. Anniversary programming will culminate with a special March 28 celebration.
