Sixty-three faculty join tenured, tenure-track ranks

New tenured and tenure-track faculty members have joined Northwestern University in the 2005-06 academic year. The following appointments have been approved by the Board of Trustees.

Feinberg School of Medicine

Charles Clevenger, professor of pathology, has an M.D and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.

Vladimir Gelfand, professor of cell and molecular biology, has a Ph.D. from Moscow State University. He specializes in the cell biology of molecular motors and was on the faculty at the University of Illinois.

Xiao-Lin He, assistant professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, has a Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. A specialist in molecular biology, he was on the faculty at Stanford University.

Thomas J. Hope, professor of cell and molecular biology, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in the cell biology of viral infections, and was a University of Illinois faculty member.

Hirokai Kiyoawa, associate professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, has a M.D. and Ph.D. from Osaka University. He was on the faculty at the University of Illinois.

Murali Prakriya, assistant professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, received a Ph.D. from Washington University and was on the faculty at Stanford University.

Geoffrey Swanson, associate professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. His specialty is pharmacology. He was on the faculty of the University of Texas.

Guang-Yu Yang, associate professor of pathology, has a Ph.D. and M.D. from China Medical University. He specializes in cancer pathology and was a Rutgers University faculty member.

Hossein Ardehali, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He specializes in cardiology, and was on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University.

Rajeshwar Awatramani, assistant professor of neurology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was on the faculty of Harvard University.

Paul J. Bryce, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester. He specializes in allergy and immunology, and was on the faculty of Harvard University.

Molly C. Carr, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. from Columbia College. A specialist in endocrinology and metabolism, she was on the faculty at the University of Washington.

Sheldon C. Chen, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine. He specializes in nephrology and was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania.

Han-Xiang Deng, associate professor of neurology, has a Ph.D. and M.D. from Hunan Medical University. He was on the faulty at Northwestern University.

Ann Harris, professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from Guy’s Hospital Medical School. She specializes in molecular biology. Harris was on the faculty at Oxford University.

Douglas Kuperman, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from John Hopkins University. He specializes in allergy and immunology, He was a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco.

John B. O’Connell, professor of medicine, has a M.D. from Loyola University. He specializes in cardiology and heart failure and was on the faculty at Wayne State University.

Yi Rao, professor of neurology, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. He was on the faculty at Washington University.

Paul T. Schumacker, professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from Albany Medical College. He was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

Gordon M. G. Shepherd, assistant professor of physiology, has a Ph.D. and M.D. from Harvard. He was on the faculty at Howard Hughes Medical Institution.

Joshua H. Singer, assistant professor of ophthalmology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Washington and was on the faculty at the National Institutes of Health.

Marcelo Soares, professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He specializes in molecular genetics and was on the faculty at the University of Iowa.

Bonnie Spring, professor of preventive medicine, has a Ph.D. from Harvard University. She specializes in behavioral science and was a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

John Varga, professor of medicine, has an M.D. from New York University. He specializes in rheumatology and was on the faculty at the University of Illinois.

David Jack Waters, assistant professor of physiology, has a Ph.D. from the University of London. He specializes in neurophysiology and was on the faculty at the Max Planck Institute.

Michael Wolf, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He specializes in health services research and was on the faculty at Northwestern University.

Jane Wu, professor of neurology, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University and an M.D. from Shanghai Second Medical University. She was on the faculty at Vanderbilt University.

Eugene Xu, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He specializes in reproductive biology and was on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco.

Kellogg School of Management

Yael Hochberg, assistant professor of finance, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. She specializes in finance and economics and was on the faculty at Cornell University.

Thomas Hubbard, associate professor or management and strategy, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He was on the faculty at the University of Chicago and is a specialist in industrial organization and organizational economics.

McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science

Xu Li, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. She specializes in bio-optics and photonics.

School of Communication

Pablo Boczkowski, associate professor of communication studies, has a Ph.D. from Cornell University. He was on the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Daniel O’Keefe, professor of communication studies, has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and was also faculty member there.

Sirida Srisombati, assistant professor of radio/television/film, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She specializes in global media.

Elaine M. Wong, assistant professor of communication studies, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She specializes in organizational communication.

School of Music

Steven H. Cohen, associate professor of performance studies, has a B.M. from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He is a clarinetist and was a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and on the faculty at the Cincinnati Conservatory.

Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences

Thomas Bozza, assistant professor of neurology and physiology, has a Ph.D. from Tufts University. He specializes in neuroscience and did postdoctoral work at Rockefeller University.

Jason Brickner, assistant professor of biology, molecular biology and cell biology, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He specializes in cell biology and nuclear envelopes. He held a postdoctoral position at the University of California, San Francisco.

Wendy Cho, associate professor of political science, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She specializes in methodology and was on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

James Druckman, associate professor of political science, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. A specialist in American politics, he was on the faculty at the University of Minnesota.

Kathryn S. Evans, assistant professor of English, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her specialty is early modern literature.

Hannah Feldman, assistant professor of art history, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. She specializes in 20th century art history.

Larry V. Hedges, professor of statistics and education and social policy, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. A specialist in meta-analysis, and was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

Susan Hespos, assistant professor of psychology, has a Ph.D. from Emory University. She specializes in cognitive development and was on the faculty at Vanderbilt University.

Marianne Hopman, assistant professor of classics, has a Ph.D. from Harvard University. She specializes in Greek, Latin, religion, anthropology and culture.

William Horton, assistant professor of psychology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He specializes in cognitive psychology and psycho linguistics and did postdoctoral work at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Matthew Hurtgen, assistant professor of geological sciences, has a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. He specializes in isotope biogeochemistry and paleoclimates. He held a postdoctoral position at Harvard University.

Hongmei Jiang, assistant professor of statistics, has a Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Chiu-Chu Melissa Liu, assistant professor of mathematics, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. She specializes in symplectic geometry and mathematical physics.

James Mahoney, associate professor of political science and sociology, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in comparative politics and was on the faculty at Brown University.

Kate Masur, assistant professor of history, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She specializes in the history of the United States before 1890. She held a postdoctoral position at George Mason University.

Leslie McCall, associate professor of sociology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and previously taught at Rutgers.

Adilson Motter, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, has a Ph.D. from Campinas State University (Brazil). A specialist in complex systems, he held an appointment at the Max Planck Institute and at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Evan Mwangi, assistant professor of English, has a Ph.D. from the University of Nairobi. He specializes in 20th century Anglophone African literature and was on the faculty at Ohio University.

David Nadler, assistant professor of mathematics, has a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He specializes in representation theory and was a faculty member at the University of Chicago.

Seamas Stiofan (James) O’Driscoll, assistant professor of Slavic languages and literatures, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. He specializes in economics and literature.

Sarah Pearsall, assistant professor of history, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. She specializes in early American and national history, and was on the faculty at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland).

Lincoln Quillian, associate professor of sociology, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. His specialty is social stratification, race, ethnicity and urban sociology. He was on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin.

Jennifer Richeson, associate professor of psychology, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. She specializes in social psychology and was a faculty member at Dartmouth College.

Marco Ruffini, assistant professor of French and Italian, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in Italian literature and culture.

Rudiger Seesemann, assistant professor of religion, has a Ph.D. from Johannes Gutenberg Universitat Mainz. He specializes in Islam in Africa and was on the faculty at the University of Bayreuth.

Krista A. Thompson, assistant professor of art history, has a Ph.D. from Emory University. She specializes in African and diasporic art and was a University of Illinois at Chicago  faculty member.

William N. West, associate professor of English, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He specializes in early modern literature and was on the faculty at the University of Colorado.
