Flu shots offered to faculty, staff

Flu shots are still available on the Evanston campus for faculty and staff.

The injections are provided by OMEGA Occupational Health Services, a division of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, and a provider of occupational health services to the University.

The cost for the flu shot is $30, payable by cash or check. Employees must pay for the injection prior to receiving it and will need to present a faculty or staff WildCARD to identify them as a faculty or staff member.

The payment receipt/ticket should be presented at the location where the injection is administered.

Kath appointed NICO co-director

William L. Kath, professor of engineering sciences and applied mathematics, has been appointed co-director of NICO, The Northwestern Institute for Complex Systems. He succeeds Julio M. Ottino, who became dean of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science this year, necessitating a search for Ottino’s replacement.

Ottino and Daniel Diermeier, IBM Distinguished Professor of Regulation and Competitive Practice at the Kellogg School of Management and co-director of NICO, founded the institute two years ago. NICO’s mission is to serve as a hub and facilitator of intellectual life at Northwestern and to produce path-breaking research across traditional boundaries in the area of complex systems. The institute is comprised of a distinguished group of faculty from all areas of the University, including engineering, business, natural sciences, education, medicine, law and the social sciences.

Greenland, two others named to Feinberg posts

Philip Greenland, M.D., chair of preventive medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine since 1991, has been named to the newly created post of executive associate dean for clinical and translational research   at the Feinberg School of Medicine.

The appointment, was announced by Lewis Landsberg, M.D., Feinberg School dean and vice president for medical affairs.

Greenland’s responsibilities are to work with Feinberg units to assess clinical research infrastructure needs; coordinate development of new services, including a computerized clinical research record system, oversee implementation of a strategic plan for clinical and translational research; and spearhead clinical research training.

Greenland stepped down as department chair but continues as the Harry W. Dingman Professor of Cardiology. Rowland W. Chang, M.D., professor of preventive medicine and of medicine and director of the Master’s of Public Health program, serves as interim department chair.

Landsberg also appointed Linda V. Van Horn, professor of preventive medicine, associate dean for faculty development.

She will be responsible for strengthening programs for faculty development at Feinberg.

Marianne M. Green, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, was named assistant dean for medical education. In her new position, she will spearhead expansion of the career advising program and assume leadership of the Honors Program in Medical Education, the University’s combined B.A./M.D. program. Green will remain a staff physician in internal medicine at the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation.

ITEC funds another startup

The Illinois Technology Enterprise Center (ITEC)–Evanston at Northwestern University has invested $25,000 in RND Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held biopharmaceutical company located in Palatine, Ill.

RND is dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of proprietary small molecule therapeutics that address unmet medical needs. This is the sixth investment ITEC has made from its pre-seed fund for technology startup companies.
