New year begins with prayer

Students displaced by hurricane begin at Northwestern

About 100 students displaced by Hurricane Katrina are now on Northwestern’s Evanston and Chicago campuses.

A total of 47 undergraduate students have enrolled in classes and another 25 are enrolled in classes offered by the School of Continuing Studies. The undergraduate students enrolled in the regular program took part in New Student Week prior to the first day of classes Sept. 20. Freshmen joined other first-year students at orientation sessions. They also attended a dinner, and their parents took part in an information session with Northwestern officials.

Eleven students have enrolled in the Graduate School. On Northwestern’s Chicago campus, 12 students are taking classes at the School of Law, three are enrolled at the Feinberg School of Medicine and two  are enrolled in the Kellogg School of Management.

Undergraduate students displaced by Hurricane Katrina will be treated to free admission to Northwestern’s home football games, courtesy of the athletic department. They will be honored at pre-game festivities at the Sept. 24 Northwestern-Penn State football game.

Northwestern observed the national day of prayer and remembrance for victims of Hurricane Katrina last Friday (Sept. 16). The Northwestern community gathered at The Rock for the observance.

Representatives of several religious traditions participated in the event, which was sponsored by the Office of the University Chaplains.
