Medvec named to research post Victoria Husted Medvec has been named associate vice president for research, it was announced by C. Bradley Moore, vice president for research and professor of chemistry. Medvec, the Adeline Barry Davee Professor of Management and Organizations in the Kellogg School of Management, will support research programs in humanities, social sciences, business, communications, journalism, law and music and also assist in developing new interdisciplinary programs.
Pipe replacement will close sidewalk The steam and condensate piping replacement for the west side of Sheridan Road will run to Sept. 2. The piping to be replaced is located under the sidewalk at 1838 Chicago Ave. and extends to the northwest corner of Foster and Sheridan. From now to Sept. 2, the sidewalk on the west side of Sheridan Road from 1838 Chicago to Foster Street will be closed.
Computer system will be interrupted June 25 A generator and an upgraded uninterruptible power supply system will be installed at the central Information Technology Datacenter June 25. The project, to strengthen the availability of University applications and protect critical data, is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, and end at noon Sunday, June 26. The project will result in an unavoidable interruption of online University services for up to 18 hours. Major University services affected include central e-mail, Electronic Time Entry System and Human Resources Information Systems.
Imaginative technology at Wired’s NextFest The Imagination Environment, a high-tech visual display developed by the Program in Network Arts, is one of the technological innovations to be featured at Wired magazine’s NextFest June 25 to 26 at Chicago’s Navy Pier. Designed and implemented by David A. Shamma, a graduate student of the Intelligent Information Laboratory (IIL), the Imagination Environment exposes the connections between ideas and the online images that it finds. “The Imagination Environment is one of the first systems to use the Web as a cultural object,” said Kristian J. Hammond, director of the IIL.
