SCS to offer sports administration degreeThe School of Continuing Studies (SCS) will offer a Master of Arts in Sports Administration, beginning next fall 2005. Areas of specialization will include sports management, sports marketing and public relations. SCS developed the master's program to prepare students to take on leadership positions in all segments of the sports industry. Students who are serious about the business of sports will gain an understanding of theoretical concepts and the ability to apply those concepts in a 10-course curriculum encompassing the diverse aspects of the sports profession. The degree is an interdisciplinary program, offering students access to faculty expertise beyond the confines of physical education departments. It reflects Northwestern's commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics. The curriculum includes seven core courses, two courses in a specialization — either sports management or sports marketing and public relations — and an independent capstone project designed with a faculty member. The capstone project may be a thesis or a practicum placement in the Northwestern department of athletics and recreation or at one of the many local colleges or professional sport franchises. The degree is designed to be completed in two years on a part-time basis. Courses will be offered on weeknights or weekends on the both campuses. The application deadline to enter the program in fall 2005 is July 29. Admission to the program is on a rolling basis; students can start in any quarter. More information and application materials are now available. Interested persons should complete the information request form at www.scs.northwestern.edu/grad/sports/ in order to be added to the mailing list and receive notification when the program materials and web site are updated. |
