Senior named academic all-star

USA TODAY has named Northwestern senior Jane Y. Lee to its 16th annual All-USA College Academic Team.

She was among 20 students nationwide who were honored for outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership. Each will receive a $2,500 cash award.

A member of Kappa Delta sorority, she was elected president of the Associated Student Government last April. She will join Deloitte Consulting after graduation in June.

Lee, of Northridge, Calif., last year was named one of GLAMOUR Magazine’s Top Ten College Women. She also was a Goldman Sachs Global Leader and Goldman Sachs Social Entrepreneurship Grant Recipient and a 2004 Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow.

At Northwestern Lee has served as Class Chair, Northwestern Class Alliance (2001-2004) and as an Undergraduate Budget and Priorities Committee Member.

Reno to deliver Women’s Symposium speech

Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will deliver the keynote speech March 8 for the 2005 Women’s Symposium at the School of Law. “Women Finding Their Voices” is the theme for this year’s week-long symposium.

Reno will talk about women and leadership, telling her own story and paying tribute to her role model, her mother.

Her speech will take place at noon March 8 in Lincoln Hall at the School of Law, 357 E. Chicago Ave., and is free and open to the public.

The Women’s Leadership Coalition, made up of law students, organized the symposium, which brings together attorneys and scholars from around the nation to speak on issues of interest to women in the law.

Northwestern hosts ESPN event on paying student-athletes

Cable television sports programmer ESPN will present a town hall event at Northwest-ern March 14 on the topic of paying student-athletes. The discussion will feature a panel of well-known authorities in college athletics, including Mark Murphy, Northwestern director of athletics; Joe Paterno, Penn State head football coach; John Thompson, former Georgetown basketball coach; Myles Brand, NCAA chairman; and Tony Dixon, player for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Other participants are sports agents and college boosters.

“Should College Athletes Be Paid?” will explore the effects that paying players would have on competitive balance, issues regarding national television contracts and the sanctity of the higher education system.

The taping of the show is free and open to the public and takes place at noon March 14 at Cahn Auditorium. It will be broadcast on ESPN from 7 to 9 p.m. March 16.

Konrad named purchasing director

Jim Konrad has joined University Services as director of purchasing.

He will develop, enforce and enhance current purchasing policies as well as analyze recent trends and developments to find new opportunities for the University.

Konrad spent the last 16 years in the state of Michigan’s central purchasing office. He began his tenure there as a buyer and was later promoted to division director. In this position, he focused primarily on strategic planning, policy changes and the identification of contracting opportunities. 

He also worked with several Michigan universities over the years on various purchasing initiatives.

HR VP Miller to give NUSAC talks on policy changes

Northwestern University Staff Advisory Council (NUSAC) will host two brownbag events in March with Associate Vice President of Human Resources Guy Miller, who will explain new University policies and revisions to the Staff Handbook. Topics include evaluative authority, transfer and promotion, holiday pay, civility and violence, and smoking. The Evanston event is at noon March 8 in the North-western Room of Norris University Center. The Chicago campus lunch is at noon March 22 in Strawn Room, #195 of Robert McCormick Hall.

University raises mileage reimbursement rate

The University has increased the allowable reimbursement driving rate for travelers who use personal vehicles for business during 2005, from 37.5 cents per mile to 40.5 cents.

Any mileage incurred in 2004 will be at the 37.5-cent rate and any travel in 2005 will be at the higher rate.
