Lies, consequences

Eric Alterman

During a recent Crain Lecture, author Eric Alterman discussed the media's inability to accurately report foreign policy and balance legitimate news coverage with more sensational, less substantial stories. Alterman, author of the new book "When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and Its Consequences," was joined by Lee Huebner, professor of communications studies and journalism, in a talk that touched on specific instances and ramifications of presidential deception, the reporting of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse story and the responsibility of the media industry in reforming itself.
