Tenured faculty named

New tenured and tenure-track faculty members have joined Northwestern in the 2004-05 academic year. The following appointments have been approved by the Board of Trustees.

Feinberg School of Medicine

• Issam Awad, professor of neurological surgery, has an M.D. from Loma Linda University. He specializes in cerebrovascular surgery and was on the faculty at the University of Colorado.

• Bernard Bendok, assistant professor of neurological surgery, has an M.D. from Northwest-ern. He specializes in endovascular neurosurgery.

• Chih-Hung Chang, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His specialty is psychometrics.

• Anis Contractor, assistant professor of physiology, has a Ph.D. from the University College of London. He specializes in neurophysiology and was previously with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

• Patrick W. Corrigan, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has a PsyD. from the Illinois School of Professional Psychiatry. He specializes in psychology and was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

• Christine DiDonato, assistant professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. A specialist in genetics, she was previously with the Ottawa Health Research Institute.

• Eleni V. Dimaraki, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. from the University of Athens. She specializes in endocrinology and was on the faculty at the University of Michigan.

• Jaime Grutzendler, assistant professor of neurology, has an M.D. from the University of Javeriana. He specializes in neurology and was on the faculty at New York University.

• Mary Hendrix, professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from George Washington University. She specializes in pediatrics and was on the faculty at the University of Iowa.

• Jian-Ping Jin, associate professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. His specialty is molecular cardiology. He was previously with Case Western Reserve.

• Namratha R. Kandula, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D./MPH from Tufts University. She specializes in health services research, and was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

• Melina Kibbe, assistant professor of surgery, has an M.D. from the University of Chicago and specializes in vascular surgery.

• Ji-Young Julie Kim, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Laval. She specializes in reproductive biology research.

• Laura Kubicek-Herzing, assistant professor of pediatrics, has a Ph.D. from Yale University. She specializes in genetics and was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

• Denys Tsz-Wai Lau, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in health services evaluation and polling research and was on the University of Michigan faculty.

• Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, assistant professor of preventive medicine, has an M.D. /ScD from Columbia University. A specialist in cardiovascular epidemiology, he was on the faculty at Harvard University.

• Mohsen Makhsous, assistant professor of physical therapy and human movement sciences, has a Ph.D. from Chalmers University.

• Patrick M. McCarthy, professor of surgery, has an M.D. from Loyola University. He specializes in cardiac surgery, and was previously with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

• Andrew Mark Naidech, assistant professor of neurology, has an M.D. from Temple University and was on the faculty at Columbia University.

• Jill C. Pelling, professor of pathology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She specializes in cancer research and was on the faculty at the University of Kansas.

• Peter Penzes, assistant professor of physiology, has a Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He specializes in neurophysiology and was on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University.

• Jelena Radulovic, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has a Ph.D. from the University of Belgrade. She specializes in neuroscience and was previously with the Max Planck Institute.

• Sarah Rice, assistant professor of cell and molecular biology, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco and specializes in motor proteins. She was on the Stanford University faculty.

• Bernice Ruo, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. from Yale University. She specializes in health services research and was on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco.

• Robert P. Schleimer, professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis and specializes in allergy-immunology. He was on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University.

• Nathaniel J. Soper, professor of surgery, has a M.D. from the University of Iowa. He specializes in gastrointestinal and endocrine surgery and was on the faculty at Washington University.

• Lu Tian, assistant professor of preventive medicine, has a DSc. from Harvard University. His specialty is biostatistics. He was on the faculty at Harvard.

• William Tse, assistant professor of pediatrics, has an M.D./Ph.D. from Yale University. He specializes in hematology and oncology, and was on the faculty at Harvard.

• Thomas Volpe, assistant professor of cell and molecular biology, has a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University, The State University of New York. He specializes in RNA processing and was previously with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

• San Ming Wang, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D./PhD from the Swiss Institute. He specializes in hematology and oncology and was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

• Xiaobin Wang, associate professor of pediatrics, has an M.D./PhD/ScD from Beijing Medical University. She was on the faculty at Boston University.

• Cara Gottardi Yajnik, assistant professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from Yale Univer-sity and specializes in critical pulmonary care and was on the University of Virginia faculty.

Kellogg School of Management

• Eric Anderson, associate professor of marketing, has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He specializes in marketing. He was a visiting professor at Kellogg last year and previously was an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Chicago and University of Rochester.

• Baris Ata, assistant professor of managerial economics and decision sciences, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He specializes in operations.

• Alp Atakan, assistant professor of managerial economics and decision sciences, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He specializes in microeconomic analysis.

• David Austen-Smith, Earl Dean Howard Distinguished Professor of Political Economy, has a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He specializes in political economy and social choice. He was a professor of political science at Northwest-ern from 1996-2004.

• Peter Bouman, assistant professor of marketing, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He specializes in marketing.

• Yuk-Fai Fong, assistant professor of management and strategy, has a Ph.D. from Boston University. He specializes in microeconomics and industrial organization. Fong was an assistant professor of economics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

• Benjamin Jones, assistant professor of management and strategy, has a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He specializes in economics of innovation and growth.

• Christopher Kuzmics, assistant professor of managerial economics and decision sciences, has a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and specializes in game theory.

• Klaus Weber, assistant professor of management and organizations, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He specializes in organizational behavior and international management.

McCormick School

• Dongning Guo, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He specializes in systems and networking.

• Martina Hausner, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, has a Ph.D. from Ludwig-Maximillian University. She specializes in environmental microbiology, and was on the faculty at the Technical University of Munich.

• Sascha Hilgenfeldt, associate professor of engineering sciences and applied mathematics and mechanical engineering, has a Ph.D. from the University of Marburg. A specialist in microfluidics, he was on the University of Twente faculty.

• Russell E. Joseph, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and specializes in computer architecture.

• Aleksandar Kuzmanovic, assistant professor of computer science, has a Ph.D. from Rice University. He specializes in systems.

• Hooman Mohseni, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has a Ph.D. from Northwestern. He specializes in solid-state nanotechnology.

• Bryan Pardo, assistant professor of computer science, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He specializes in artificial intelligence.

• Matthew Tresch, assistant professor of biomedical engineering with joint appointment in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Feinberg School. He has a Ph.D. from M.I.T. and specializes in neural engineering.

Medill School of Journalism

• Douglas M. Foster, associate professor of journalism, has a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He was on the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley.

School of Communication

• Sumitrajit Dhar, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders, has a Ph.D. from Purdue University. He specializes in applied hearing science and was on the faculty at Indiana University.

• Robert Hariman, professor of communication studies, has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He was on the faculty at Drake University.

• Patrick Chun Man Wong, professor of communication sciences and disorders, has a Ph.D. from the University of Texas. A specialist in speech perception, he was on the faculty at the University of Chicago.

• Harvey Young Jr., assistant professor of theatre, has a Ph.D. from Cornell University and specializes in theatre history, literature and criticism.

Education and Social Policy

• Wan Shun Eva Lam, assistant professor of human development and social policy and learning sciences, has a Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley. She specializes in culture, learning and literacy and was a lecturer and research fellow at the University of Massachusetts.

School of Law

• Tonja Jacobi, assistant professor of law, has a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. She specializes in constitutional law and administrative law and taught at Stanford.

• Jide O. Nzelibe, assistant professor of law, has a J.D. from Yale University and an MPA in international relations from Princeton University. He specializes in international public law and economics and previously was the Bigelow Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago.

School of Music

• Pamela Hinchman, associate professor of performance studies, has an M.M. from the Curtis Institute. She was on the University of Kansas faculty.

• Elizabeth Margulis, assistant professor of music studies, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. She specializes in theory and cognition and was a faculty member at the University of Arkansas.

Weinberg College

• Theodore Brennan, associate professor of philosophy, has a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He specializes in ancient philosophy and was on the faculty at Yale University.

• Sherwin Bryant, assistant professor of African American studies, has a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. A specialist in history, he was on the faculty at Kenyon College.

• Francisco Buera, assistant professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and specializes in macroeconomics and development.

• Jeffrey Ely, professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in economic theory and was on the faculty at Boston University.

• Sean Gailmard, assistant professor of political science, has a Ph.D. from Cal Tech University. He specializes in methodology and was on the University of Chicago faculty.

• Jonathan Garthoff, assistant professor of philosophy, has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and specializes in ethics.

• Nina Gourianova, assistant professor of Slavic languages and literatures, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University. She specializes in Russian literature and visual arts and was on the Colgate University faculty.

• Igal Hendel, professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from Harvard University. His specialty is industrial organization. He was on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin.

• Barnor Hesse, associate professor of African American studies, has a Ph.D. from the University of Essex. He specializes in sociology and Diaspora studies and was on the faculty at the University of East London.

• Darlene Clark Hine, professor of African American studies, has a Ph.D. from Kent State. She specializes in African American history and was on the Michigan State University faculty.

• Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, assistant professor of political science, has a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and specializes in international relations.

• Andrew Jacobson, assistant professor of geological sciences, has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He specializes in geochemistry and was on the University of Michigan faculty.

• Bryna Kra, associate professor of mathematics, has a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her specialty is dynamical systems and ergodic theory. She was on the faculty at Pennsylvania State University.

• Aviv Nevo, professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from Harvard. He specializes in empirical industrial organization and was on the University of California, Berkeley faculty.

• Susan Pearson, assistant professor of history, has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, and specializes in early United States history.

• Yari Perez-Marin, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese, specializes in Latin American literature and culture.

• Monica Prasad, assistant professor of sociology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She specializes in macro-comparative studies and economic sociology and was on the faculty at Freie Universität Berlin.

• Giorgio E. Primiceri, assistant professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and specializes in macroeconomics.

• Rudiger Seesemann, assistant professor of religion, has a Ph.D. from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. A specialist in Islam in Africa, he was on the faculty at the University of Bayreuth.

• Andrew T. Sweeting, assistant professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and specializes in industrial organization.

• Elie Tamer, professor of economics, has a Ph.D. from Northwestern. He specializes in econometrics and was on the faculty at Princeton University.
