Events planned for black history month

Northwestern has scheduled programs in February and March for Black History Month.

The African American Student Affairs office (AASA) theme is “Black Movements, Looking Back While Reaching Forward.”

The celebration includes an art exhibition, lectures as well as discussions, a craft workshop and choral, dance and theatre.

Most activities are free and open to the public and will be held in Evanston.

• “Afro-Modernity: African Diaspora and African Identity in the Modern Era,” 7 p.m. Feb. 7, AASA.

• “The Art of UTRIBE-Mask Making Workshop,” 5:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 8, ARTica Studios, Norris University Center.

• Diversity Symposium, “A Leader’s Perspective,” 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 14-17. Norris Center.

• “Out Da Box,” 8 p.m., Feb. 17; 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Feb. 18; and 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Feb. 19, Shanley Pavilion.

• “Black Student Move-ments and the 1968 Takeover of the Office of the Bursar at Northwestern University,” 7 p.m. Feb. 20, AASA.

• “Life with Margaret,” A Collection of Paintings and Other Works by Margaret Burroughs, Feb. 17 - March 27, Dittmar Memorial Gallery.

• Women’s Chorus: “Bridge to Africa,” 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27, Lutkin Hall.

• “African Americans and the Media,” 7 p.m. Feb. 28, African American Student Affairs.

• Café Noir presents “The Poets of Revolution,” 7 p.m. March 1, Dittmar Memorial Gallery.

• “Girlfriends Today,” 6 p.m. March 3, McCormick Tribune Center.

• Northwestern Community Ensemble Winter Concert, 6 p.m. March 5, Cahn Auditorium.
