President considers campus development

President Henry S. Bienen responded to the Advisory Committee on University Space Planning. President Bienen established the committee in October 2002 to advise him on key issues related to future development on both campuses. The twenty-two-person committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, was asked to "articulate a vision and set of values to guide future development at Northwestern."

The successful sequencing of the human genome has spawned an even more challenging area of large-scale scientific study: proteomics — the study of all proteins encoded by the approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes found in humans.

Northwestern honors legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through song, dance, debate and discussion

Northwestern Community Ensemble

Members of the Northwestern Community Ensemble perform the works “There’s No Hatred” and “Free” during the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration Monday at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Along with the Alice Millar Chapel Choir, the ensemble provided musical accompaniment on a day filled with events to honor the legacy of Dr. King. See page 2 for coverage.

Northwestern celebrated and remembered Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 17 through several events on both campuses. In her Evanston keynote address, Yolanda King, eldest daughter of Dr. King, said that it was a day of deeds.

Ottino named McCormick dean

Julio Ottino, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, has been appointed dean of the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University, effective March 28, it was announced Tuesday by Provost Lawrence B. Dumas.

Northwestern and the Chicago Botanic Garden are joining forces to offer the nation’s first master of science degree in plant biology and conservation — a unique interdisciplinary program designed to educate the next generation of plant scientists.

kids in KinderCare

Liam Giles and a friend play at the Chicago campus KinderCare, which opened earlier this month.

The center provides priority enrollment to the children of Northwestern and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation students, faculty and staff. It is located at 446-448 E. Ontario St., two blocks south of Abbott Hall.

KinderCare serves children from six weeks to five years old. The center’s design was customized to meet the needs of the Northwestern community with the majority of its 112 spaces designated for infants and toddlers.

Center on Wrongful Convictions: Three receive pardons

Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich pardoned Michael Evans, Paul Terry and Dana Holland — clients of the School of Law’s Center on Wrongful Convictions — based on innocence, following the men’s earlier release from long prison sentences for crimes they did not commit.
