Student dies after game

A Northwestern student collapsed and died after the Northwestern football game Saturday night.

Frederick E. Lieb, 20, a third-year chemical engineering major from Crestview, Fla., collapsed after he and a friend ran from the upper deck of Ryan Field, Northwestern’s football stadium, to join a post-game celebration on the field after Northwestern’s victory over Ohio State. Mr. Lieb had a pacemaker from a previously diagnosed heart condition.

According to his friend, Mr. Lieb complained of shortness of breath while running down to the field. Shortly after arriving on the field shortly before midnight Saturday, he collapsed. He received CPR from security personnel and a doctor and was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending emergency room physician.

University officials and counselors met the next day with his friends and members of the residence hall where Mr. Lieb lived. Plans for a memorial service on campus have not yet been finalized.
