nwu.edu retires June 20By Mindy Hagen Information Technology will retire the nwu.edu domain name effective June 20, meaning all e-mail addressed to that domain will be unable to be delivered. In March 2000, Information Technology introduced northwestern.edu as the new domain name for the University. This switch was made to help standardize the University’s identity, said Wendy Woodward, director of Technology Support Services. Although all faculty members and staff who have joined the University since 2000 automatically were given northwestern.edu e-mail address, some longer-term faculty and staff have failed to make the switch. Woodward estimates that 10 percent of all incoming e-mail traffic to the University still is addressed to the nwu.edu domain. When delivery to the nwu.edu domain ends on June 20, it also will include the following sub-domains: md.nwu. edu, law.nwu.edu, Kellogg.nwu.edu, and alum.kellogg.nwu. Woodward said all faculty and staff members with these outdated addresses must opt out of the old domain name and switch their e-mail to a functional northwestern.edu domain. Instructions are available at https://snap.it.northwestern.edu/it/snaps/remove-domains.cgi. Woodward said the process only takes about 30 seconds. Switching to the northwestern.edu domain also has another advantage, Woodward said. That domain receives far less spam mail than the old nwu.edu site, she said. Faculty and staff members switching their e-mail address should also make sure to re-subscribe to any association listservs with the new domain name. For information on how to unsubscribe and re-subscribe with the new e-mail, go to www.tss.northwestern.edu/conferencing/listserv/. |
