Dolphin Show brings back ‘Gypsy’

The 62nd Annual Dolphin Show will present the musical “Gypsy,” which will be performed at Cahn Auditorium at 8 p.m. Jan. 23; 8 p.m. Jan. 24; 2 p.m. Jan. 25; 8 p.m. Jan. 30; and 2 and 8 p.m. Jan. 31.

With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Gypsy” is a sexy, funny, upbeat and touching story that chronicles the real-life transformation of the untalented and shy Louise Hovick into the world’s highest-paid, highest-profile and most notorious stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee.

“Gypsy” tells the story of the desperately manic woman who made it all happen — her mother. The mother of all stage mothers, Mama Rose lies, flirts and steals to get her young and talented daughter June into show business — all the while saddled with the burden of finding a place in June’s elaborate act for her untalented older daughter Louise.

When June elopes to escape her mother’s relentless ambition, Rose becomes determined to get Louise’s name up in lights — even if it means forcing her into stripping and losing the only man she’s ever truly loved.

The 2004 student production features a cast of 20 Northwest-ern undergraduates and six child actors from the community, plus a 22-member business staff and a stage crew of nearly 40.

On the morning of Jan. 29, The Dolphin Show will host its annual Educational Outreach performance at Cahn Auditorium. Students invited from area schools will see the show at a discounted price and learn about the theatrical world. Following that performance, the students will have an opportunity to participate in a talk-back session with the cast and crew, giving them a chance to ask questions about The Dolphin Show, Northwestern, “Gypsy,” or theatre.

The Dolphin Show’s First Annual Alumni Night will be held Friday, Jan. 31. After the show, alumni and their families are invited to attend a post-show discussion with Broadway actress and Dolphin Show alumna Kate Shindle. As a freshman, Shindle made her first appearance in The Dolphin Show in the 1995 production of “Gypsy.” She also had a lead role in The Dolphin Show’s performance of “City of Angels” in 1996. In 1998, Shindle won the Miss America Pageant. After Shindle’s post-show discussion, she will attend the alumni reception in the Guild Lounge adjacent to Cahn Auditorium. Tickets for this special alumni night event are $30 and include the show, discussion and dessert reception.

Single tickets to “Gypsy” are $22 for the general public; $18 for senior citizens and North-western faculty and staff; and $10 for students.
