Obituary: Gregg Kindle

Gregg Kindle, 48, of Glenview, assistant dean of students and director of university residential life, died Dec. 7 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

A celebration of life service was held at the La Salle Manor Retreat Center in Plano, where Mr. Kindle and his wife, Joan, were married. 

A campus memorial service for Mr. Kindle is scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow (Jan. 9) in Alice Millar Chapel.

Vice President for Student Affairs William Banis said, “Gregg Kindle has been one of the pillars in our campus community. He has been a key contributor in shaping and improving the quality of student life for several generations of North-western students. The university has been like a second home to him, and his colleagues, friends and students have been like his second family He has been a valued colleague and friend.”

Mr. Kindle was a member of the Student Affairs residential life staff at Northwestern for more than 20 years. His duties included managing residence hall programs, supervising the staff of residence hall assistants and coordinators and advising fraternities and sororities. 

A native of Berwyn, Mr. Kindle grew up on the southwest side of Chicago. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in higher education from Bowling Green State University.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Kindle is survived by his sons, Evan (14) and Jordan (10); parents Frank and Dolores Kindle of Bradenton, Fla.; brothers Glen of Downers Grove and Gary of Hannibal, Mo.; and sister Denise of Gurnee. The Kindle family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.
