Annual parking permits on sale

Annual parking permits for the 2003-04 academic year are on sale now.

The cost of this year's full-time permit is $376. Part-time employees (those working 20 hours or less) will continue to receive this permit at half the stated rate, $188.

The cost increase from $333 is due to an increase in the City of Evanston's parking tax. The city tax accounts for 7.2 percent of the total 12.9 percent increase in the parking permits. The balance of the increase is related to shuttle bus funding for both the Intercampus and Ryan Field bus services and relatively small cost increases for maintenance and administration.

The City of Evanston increased its annual tax per permit from $96 to $120 per year. Northwestern now accounts for nearly 40 percent of the total annual parking tax revenue collected by the City.

The cost of the Ryan Field remote permit will remain at $25. Ryan Field remains an alternative to those not wishing to pay the full permit rate and for those who live in the walking zone and need a place to park their vehicle. Individuals who purchase a Ryan Field permit are permitted to park on the main campus during the summer term.

The schedules can be viewed at www.univsvcs.northwestern.edu/Parking/evanston.html

A number of construction projects are nearing completion, allowing additional parking to be added to the Allen Center lot, the Cook Hall east lot, the South Beach Parking Structure and the Foster/Walker lot.

The Parking Office continues to recommend, however, that parkers drive directly to the lots that have been identified as having the largest number of available spaces. These lots include the south campus garage, the north beach (sports pavilion and aquatics center) and lots near Kemper Hall and the lakeside intramural fields.

If you or your department did not receive the renewal application, you must call the parking office and request an application through the mail, download a renewal application from www.northwestern.edu/up/parking/Missing%20Application.htm, or visit the parking office in person to complete an application.

First time buyers of the annual permit must appear in person at the parking office.

For further details, you can also contact the parking office or e-mail Merrill Silverman, technical services sergeant, at m-silverman@northwestern.edu.
