Board approves tenure, tenure-track faculty members

New tenured and tenure-track faculty members have joined Northwestern University in the 2002-03 academic year. The following appointments have been approved by the Board of Trustees.

Feinberg School of Medicine

• Thomas E. Adrian, professor of surgery, has a Ph.D. from the Royal Medical School. He specializes in gastrointestinal oncology.

• John Ansel, professor of dermatology, has an M.D. from MCP Hahnemann University School of Medicine.

• Cheryl A. Armstrong, associate professor of dermatology, has an M.D. from Indiana University. Armstrong specializes in treatment of advanced melanoma.

• David W. Baker, associate professor of medicine, has an M.D. from the University of California–Los Angeles. His specialty is general internal medicine.

• Elizabeth A. Calhoun, assistant professor of urology, has a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. Calhoun specializes in outcomes research.

• Mercedes Carnethon, assistant professor of preventive medicine, has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. She specializes in cardiovascular epidemiology.

• Timothy J. Carroll, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Carroll is a specialist in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

• Anjen Chenn, assistant professor of pathology, has an M.D. and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He specializes in medical microbiology.

• Dane M. Chetkovich, assistant professor of neurology, has an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas.

• Julius DeWald, assistant professor of physical therapy and human movement sciences, has a Ph.D. from Loma Linda University.

• Steven DeVries, assistant professor of ophthalmology, has an M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His specialty is retinal neurobiology.

• Linda Emanuel, professor of medicine, has an M.D. from Harvard University. She specializes in geriatrics.

• Jaime Garcia-Anoveros, assistant professor of anesthesiology, has a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

• Eldin Karaikovic, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, has an M.D. from the University of Sarajevo. Karaikovic specializes in spine and orthopaedic surgery.

• Robert M. Lavker, professor of dermatology, has a Ph.D. from Clemson University.

• Liming Li, assistant professor of molecular pharmacology and biological chemistry, has a Ph.D. from the University of California–Davis. Li specializes in prions and yeast proteins.

• Ruth Lupu, associate professor of medicine, has a Ph.D. from Tel Aviv University. Lupu specializes in breast cancer.

• Gianmaria Maccaferri, assistant professor of physiology, has an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Milan.

• Colum MacKinnon, assistant professor of physical therapy and human movement sciences, has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto.

• Thomas J. McGarry, assistant professor of medicine, has an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His specialty is cardiology.

• Marco Martina, assistant professor of physiology, has an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Trieste, Italy.

• Leonidas C. Plantanias, professor of medicine and deputy director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, has an M.D. from the University of Patras, Greece. Plantanias specializes in hemalogic malignancies.

• Gustavo Rodriguez, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has an M.D. from the University of Illinois–Chicago.

• Robert L. Satcher, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, has an M.D. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His specialty is orthopaedic oncology.

• Dana Small, assistant professor of neurology, has a Ph.D. from McGill University. Her specialty is cognitive neurology.

• Greg Smith, assistant professor of micro-immunology, has a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in herpes viruses.
