News & Announcements

Winter 2008: NUTV is now extended to faculty and staff for use with common area televisions. Video Furnace has created a NUTV Set Top Box that converts the NUTV internet stream into a video signal. Faculty and staff can order NUTV television service via the CONDUITS Online Order form and bill the set up costs to a CUFS account.  For more information visit the NUTV television Web site.

Spring 2007: NUTV improves viewing quality and adds 50 percent more channels to the lineup, in partnership with DIRECTV. The upgrade was made in response to student feedback to NUIT and the Division of Student Affairs, and the new channels were selected via student survey.

Winter 2006: New enhancements for NUTV, including an easier-to-use video player interface with added keyboard shortcuts, are now available to users following a recent system upgrade to version 4.0.

Fall 2005: New channel lineup is here! In response to the student survey, Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) and Student Affairs added two new channels to the fall lineup. The History Channel and the Fox News Channel are replacing the Disney Channel and A&E.

Spring 2005: In partnership with VideoFurnace and MTV, Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) and Student Affairs are proud to announce the addition of mtvU to both "Basic" and "Expanded" NUTV service at Northwestern.

The addition of mtvU marks the introduction of programming dedicated to every aspect of university life for students - from music, to news, to general student life issues and activities. Currently, mtvU broadcasts to over 700 campuses and over 6 million students across the country, making it the largest television network devoted to university students.

NUTV service is available across the on-campus community on multicast-enabled, switched network connections. Users looking to watch mtvU through "Basic NUTV" or "Expanded NUTV" can go to the NUTV Web page and select the appropriate service offering.

For information about mtvU, please visit <www.mtvu.com>.

Fall 2004: New enhancements for NUTV users have been made available with a system upgrade to 3.5. The most noticeable improvement is that the new player will interact with Windows XP's Service Pack 2 built-in firewall. Windows XP users who have downloaded Service Pack 2 will not have to permanently modify their firewall settings to allow NUTV to work.

In addition, users can now search for a particular program by selecting the channel that they wish to search, typing in a specific program title into the search field, which is located above the program guide. The search engine will then search that channel's program lineup and descriptions. Results will be displayed at the top of the channel's program lineup.

Summer 2004: New enhancements for NUTV users were made available with an upgrade to System 3 over the summer. Some of the enhancements include:

  • Improved video quality with the upgrade from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4. In addition, NUTV is downloaded at 3MB per second rather than 2MB per second and the resolution was increased from 320 x 240 to 480 x 240.
  • Closed captioning is now available within NUTV. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions for information on how to activate.
  • The channel list shows what's playing "right now" on all channels for easier "at-a-glance" access to what's on NUTV.
  • In the Dashboard Guide View, users can toggle between the channel list and the program list, and then use the arrow keys to move up and down either list. Program descriptions are available under the Channel Program Guide
  • Users can now control the volume and/or change the channel by holding down the Control key (Ctrl) and using the arrow keys on their keyboard. The up/down arrows control the volume. The left/right arrows control the channels. Mac users must hold down the Command key to use the arrow functions.

Spring 2004: NUIT changed the NUTV Web portal and view tool to better reflect service options available to the on-campus community. NUTV now includes two tiers of NUTV service - Basic and Expanded. "Expanded NUTV," made available to students through NUIT's partnership with Student Affairs, offers the same programming currently available to undergraduate students living on campus. The newly added "Basic NUTV" service is available across the on-campus community on multicast-enabled, switched network connections. The channels are determined by the University and are provided for the purpose of supporting the academic mission of Northwestern. "Basic NUTV" includes two CSPAN channels, NUCH 1 (NU Channel 1), and the latest addition of a French language channel.

C-SPAN/C-SPAN2: Northwestern University and Video Furnace, in collaboration with C-SPAN and Internet2, are making live, high-quality C-SPAN and C-SPAN2 broadcasts available 24 hours a day via NUTV's basic service. C-SPAN and C-SPAN2 can also be accessed via www.i2-multicast.northwestern.edu by anyone on Internet2.

C-SPAN and C-SPAN2 are part of a research project that is distinct from the channels provided and voted upon as part of NUTV's expanded programming. They have been added to the basic NUTV lineup as a convenience without additional charge to the University community.
