NUSAC in Action - 2004 Health & Benefits Fair Survey Results

At the 2004 Health and Benefits Fair, NUSAC handed out a survey for staff members to fill out. Below are the responses.

1. If you could ask President Beinen one question what would it be?

How and why is it so hard for advancement?

How do you expect people that make such little money to pay for parking passes and give to United Way?

Can you increase 401k to equal faculty?

Why do staff receive less matching funds for our 403b? (What kind of message do you think that sends?)

Why is there no system of checks and balances to protect transferring employees from supervisors who try to keep them from leaving?

Why isn’t there on-site care in Evanston?

Why pay/pay so much for parking?

2. What changes or improvements would you like to see implemented to help staff?

More help options.
Spouse benefits.
Equal opportunity in salary—it is clear that African Americans make less across the board.
401k contribution equal between faculty and staff.
Higher percentage of matching 403b.
Lower parking rate for Evanston—it’s unaffordable and financially burdensome.
Why can’t we have separate sick days for our families vs. ourselves? (Five days/year is not enough for family of three kids.
Need more support staff.
We should get pay rate that new incoming staff get that are going in the same position.

3. What do you enjoy about working at the university?

The benefits and the opportunity [to] go to school.
It’s close to home.
The incredible opportunity to learn from others through classes, lectures and guest speaking events; working with students keep me here (they’re great).
Campus beauty.
Educational environment.
Students.
School tuition discount.
