Spring '09 NUPIP Program Update:
What an exciting time to be involved in the Public Interest Program! This year has been one of many transitions for NUPIP on every level. We are happy to say that we have transitioned into being a part of the brand new Center for Civic Engagement on campus. The Center, located at 1813 Hinman Ave will, starting in the fall, help coordinate and publicize opportunities for students to get actively involved in the community. We are the first official program to move into the building, so we have had lots of space from which to dream up new ideas and send lots of emails. This is a wonderful next step for NUPIP, as we hope that this will only strengthen the partnerships between NU, Evanston and Chicago, as we build a greater community together.
Moving the program office is not the only move we have made. NUPIP reached out to other cities this year, and in our first year of National Expansion, we have matched a fellow in Washington, D.C.! This was the result of much hard work from several amazing alumni in these cities, as well as in New York City. National Expansion could not have happened without their support, and the support of Public Interest Programs at other universities, who will assist our Northwestern fellows during their fellowship year.
We are also pleased that we have placed fellows at seven brand new sites in Chicago! Many thanks to those Host Organizations; we look forward to partnering with them this year.
Perhaps our biggest transition is the departure of two of our Program Coordinators and our Placement Coordinator. Kelly Kirpatrick and Sam Schiller will be graduating, and moving on to do incredible things. Kelly will be working in Thailand through the Princeton in Asia Program, and Sam will be working as a NUPIP fellow at the environmental investment firm, Wabashco. Mary Bowmann will continue her work with the Center For Independent Futures. We cannot thank them enough for their tireless dedication to the program, and we will miss them greatly. We know that this year’s momentum will carry us through all of these transitions so that we can continue moving and shaking!
