Center for Civic Engagement

The new Center for Civic Engagement at Northwestern University will open its doors this coming fall. This highly anticipated addition to the Northwestern engagement community will facilitate the links between education, active citizenship, and social responsibility. Academic and service opportunities, community partnerships, and research will provide the foundation for the Center’s mission to engage students of all ages.

The Center for Civic Engagement has been a work in progress for many years, and was founded earlier this year. The Center was created in response to a group of students and faculty who felt that Northwestern needed the Center to promote a culture of active civic engagement throughout the university community. The Center will be a clearinghouse for all information on the civic-learning opportunities that are available to students on and off campus. By enhancing the traditional academic curricula with hands-on service experiences, Northwestern students will be better prepared to be active citizens and leaders after graduation.

The Center will provide space for students to coordinate new partnerships with the community and faculty, but will also house established programs such as the Northwestern Public Interest Program. PIP is the first student-run program to have office space in the new center. The Associate Director of the Center, Rob Donahue says, “We are very excited to have the PIP office in the Center. PIP’s programming is a perfect example of the kind of opportunities we hope students will come to view as an integral part of their education at Northwestern.”
