Academic Year Obligations

Obligations 

Acceptance of the NROTC scholarship to Northwestern University obligates you to an active duty service commitment. The length of this commitment depends on your choice of career option. You will incur this obligation upon the first day of classes in the Fall of your sophomore year. In addition to an active duty obligation, you will have certain other responsibilities as a member of our NROTC team. The responsibilities of the typical four year Navy Option Scholarship student are displayed below (for requirements specific to other scholarship options, see Academic Year Obligations):

Typical 4-year Navy Scholarship Option

Marine Option: First year Marine Option Scholarship midshipmen have a very similar schedule to that pictured, with exceptions:
- Physical Training is mandatory three times per week (usually Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Friday morning at 0600).
- All Marine Options are members of the drill team, so drill team practice is mandatory.
- Marine Options are not required to take Calculus.
Nurse Option: Nurse Option midshipmen attend all classes except Naval Science at Loyola University of Chicago. Loyola's academic year is scheduled differently than that of Northwestern, so freshman classes are in progress during Orientation Week. Nurse Option freshmen receive permission from their professors at Loyola to miss class during this critical week of training. Nurse Options are not required to take Calculus.

Marine Option: Second year Marine Option Scholarship midshipmen have a very similar schedule to that pictured, with exceptions:
- Physical Training is mandatory three times per week (usually Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Friday morning at 0600).
- All Marine Options are members of the drill team, so drill team practice is mandatory.
- Marine Options are not required to take Physics or Naval Engineering.
- Sophomore Marine Options will either take one of the following Naval Science courses instead of Naval Engineering: NS 336 Evolution of Warfare or NS 346 History of Amphibious Warfare.
Nurse Option: Nurse Option midshipmen attend all classes except Naval Science Lab at Loyola University of Chicago. There are no Naval Science Courses for the sophomore Nurse Option, and they are not required to take Physics. Nurse Options take Loyola University's equivalent of the Organizational Behavior course.

Marine Option: Third year Marine Option Scholarship midshipmen have a very similar schedule to that pictured, with exceptions:
- Physical Training is mandatory three times per week (usually Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Friday morning at 0600).
- All Marine Options are members of the drill team, so drill team practice is mandatory.
- Marine Options are not required to take Navigation or Naval Operations.
- Junior Marine Options will either take one of the following Naval Science courses instead: NS 336 Evolution of Warfare or NS 346 History of Amphibious Warfare.
- In the summer following their junior year, Marine Options go to OCS at Quantico, Virginia.
Nurse Option: Nurse Option midshipmen attend all classes except Naval Science Lab at Loyola University of Chicago. There are no Naval Science Courses for the junior Nurse Option.

- Physical Training is mandatory three times per week (usually Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Friday morning at 0600).
- All Marine Options are members of the drill team, so drill team practice is mandatory.
- Marine Options are not required to take Naval Weapons Systems.
Nurse Option: Nurse Option midshipmen attend all classes except Naval Science at Loyola University of Chicago. Nurse Option midshipmen are not required to take Naval Weapons Systems.
