2nd Class Cruise
We consider the summer after your sophomore year to be the most important in terms of your development as an officer. During Second Class Cruise, Navy Option Midshipmen are fully integrated into the shipboard organization and are assigned the duties of middle level enlisted personnel regularly assigned to Navy commands. This summer is intended to familiarize you with life at sea, shipboard organization, ship systems, evolutions, and safety requirements at sea and in port. Your second class cruise is generally conducted aboard a surface ship, but a few midshipmen spend this summer on a submarine cruise.

You will also develop an appreciation for tasks, responsibilities, and living and working conditions of enlisted personnel aboard ship, and be provided hands-on training in seagoing skills through personnel qualification standards (PQS).

Midshipmen often spend a great deal of time underway at sea, and some even cross oceans. This will be one of your first opportunities to visit foreign ports and develop friendships with midshipmen from across the country, a key aspect of Navy life at sea.
