Post-Graduate Obligations
By accepting the NROTC scholarship to Northwestern University, you are obligated to an active duty service commitment once you have commenced your sophomore year. During your senior year, you will decide the warfare community in which you would like to serve. This choice will determine the length of your active duty service obligation. Commitment length is variable in certain communities, as described below:
As a Naval Aviator your commitment depends on a number of factors. First, obligated service begins after you receive your warfare qualification. The length of your commitment will depend on the type of platform that you fly (fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, etc.) and will be affected by your flight training completion date. Specific commitments are currently:
Naval Flight Officer: |
6 years |
Rotary wing aircraft: |
7 years |
Fixed wing aircraft: |
Props- 7 years Jets- 8 years |

Submarine Officer
As a Submarine Officer your commitment commences on the day you are commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. This commitment is currently five years in length, and includes over one year of specialized training in Nuclear Power and Submarine Operations before you report to your first boat. The average sea tour length for the submarine officer is three years.
Nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer
Like the submarine officer, the Nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer has a five year commitment commencing on the day of commissioning. You will also spend one year ashore receiving specialized training in Nuclear Power, typically between your first and second sea tours.

If you are commissioned as a conventional Surface Warfare Officer, your commitment will be four years, commencing on the day you are commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. This four year tour is usually broken into two smaller sea tours, each approximately one and a half to two years in length.

The Marine Corps ground officer is obligated to four years of active duty service, which commences when you report to The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. This will typically occur soon after your commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. For Marine Corps aviation officers, your length of commitment depends on a number of factors (see Naval Aviation) above.

As a Navy Nurse, your commitment is four years in length, commencing when you are commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy.
