Obligations : Academic Year Obligations

Overview

Academics
Based on your scholarship option (Navy 4year/2year, Marine, Nurse) you will have a specialized course of instruction in addition to your major courses. Each semester, midshipmen take one class, taught by Naval officers, that helps to prepare them for a career of leadership in the Naval Service. Topics include Naval history, shipboard engineering, navigation, and ethics.

Military
Your introduction to the military way of life begins in the week before your freshman year at Northwestern University. From that point forward, certain requirements exist to aid your development as an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps.

Extracurricular
In addition to academic and military requirements, NROTC at Northwestern University provides a variety of extracurricular options available only to midshipmen. These include social events (annual Military Ball and Dining-In) and optional opportunities for competition (the sailing team, drill team, and rifle/pistol team (among others)). In many of these activities, Midshipman partner with or compete against other NROTC units.
